Do you have worries about too much debt?
Are you worried about how much you spend?
Are you starting over after a change in life’s circumstances?
Do you wish you knew more about money?
Do you wish you were just good with money?
Why I know what I’m talking about
I have lived with too much debt. I have worried about how much I spend. I have had to start over. I have wished I could just get on top of my bills.
I just wanted to be good with money. I wanted to live wholeheartedly.
I still sometimes lie awake at 3am worrying about money. I often worry about leaving a financial legacy for my kids. I often worry about how I am going to help my kids financially now and in the future. I still sometimes worry about the amount of money I spend. I still sometimes feel ashamed and embarrassed about my past behaviours with money.
I can’t stop my first thought about money but I have learnt to change my second thought about it and then take better actions around money.
Do you relate to how I feel?
Yes, I have the financial advice authorisations, financial qualifications and I have the experience in the financial services industry but more than anything I have lived with and managed money stuff that life has thrown at me. I’ve lived with out of control debt and stepped off the debt spiral. I have lived with having to start over. I have lived with the worry of being a single mum and raising three kids. I have lived with addiction and I have lived with a life threatening illness. I have remarried and we have worked through our different beliefs and behaviours around money. And now I can say I live a wholehearted life with financial wellbeing.
I tried to find help but could not find it. I earned too much to see a financial counsellor. I did not have enough money to invest to interest a financial planner. What I needed was financial therapy. I needed help with my beliefs and behaviours about money. I also needed help with other areas of my financial life but I needed to get the foundations right. So, I worked in the superannuation and financial advice industry to learn and set up my own money program.
I recognised that the Government, my bank, insurance providers and my superannuation fund had structures, products, tools and services in place that could help me. I have used these, amongst other strategies, to rebuild my financial life.
I have twenty years’ experience in senior roles in Australia’s superannuation, financial advice and wealth management industry. I have a further 10 plus years’ experience in running businesses.
I am a mum of three kids in their twenties and for a big part of their lives I was a single working mum. I am now very happily married to my partner Pete. In the end, I had to accept that the problem was within me. The problem wasn’t any raw deals that life had dealt me. In the end, I had to get to know and truly care and look after myself. I had to take responsibility, put my big girl’s pants on and start looking at my beliefs and behaviours that were getting in the way of my own wellbeing. And it started with money.
Do you recognise any of my experiences as your own?
